Tips for keeping your bed linen clean and fresh

Don’t eat in bed. This will lead to a build-up of crumbs and other debris, which can be very uncomfortable to sleep with and can make for quite a mess!

Why not invest in a mattress protector to give your mattress extra security against coffee spills, dead skin cells and sweat? These protectors are extremely comfortable and will help your mattress last much longer.

Air out your bedroom occasionally by leaving the windows open and pulling back the bedding, which will help fight bacteria, bedbugs and dust mites.

While we all love to snuggle up with our pets, it’s a good idea not to let them jump into bed with you – it’s true, sometimes that’s easier said than done! Stray paws and stray dirty hairs can quickly make a mess of your beautiful white sheets (or any colour), so limit your pets’ time in your bedroom – if possible!

Some advice

Cold or warm water wash?

Although it varies depending on the washing machine, 40°C is usually the optimum temperature for washing linen. However, if you’ve been using your bed linen a little longer than you should have, consider washing at a higher temperature, especially during colds and flu season.

Hot water kills more pathogens than low heat, but always check the washing instructions on the linen label.

Hand or machine washing?

Although you can wash your bed linen by hand, it’s best to use a washing machine for a deeper clean. Occasionally you can soak the linen in warm water and wash it by hand if it is not too dirty. Those that have heavily soiled stains and/or have not been washed for a long time should be machine washed in hot water.

We hope this guide has helped explain how exactly to wash your linen. Although not exactly enjoyable work, clean and comfortable bed linen is important for eliminating bed bugs, keeping your bed hygienic and of course for a wonderful night’s sleep.
